In Vino Veritas

Amber Roman’s practice turns photography into oil painting to explore a contemporary presentation of the historical diagnosis of female hysteria, through candid depictions of student nightlife. The photographs are taken by herself, without warning the subjects to explore how they respond to the cameras presence. Through this, her paintings reject formality found in everyday scenarios- each selected image is a candid and unposed portrait, the subject(s) usually under the influence of alcohol, at student social gatherings. Amber is interested in exploring what defines social norms placed on women, choosing images with striking appearances that go against apparent gender roles and stereotypes.
