Launch of Liverpool School of & Art Design’s Master’s Online Degree Show

Around 25 postgraduate students from MA courses at Liverpool School of Art & Design, including Art in Science, Exhibition Studies, Fashion: Innovation & Realisation, Fine Art, and Graphic Design & Illustration, are set to exhibit their final research projects on the school’s Degree Show website from the 7^th November 2022.

Transdisciplinary practice is a core ethos of the MA programmes in the school, and the student’s practice-led or practice-based research projects tackle real world problems, push beyond disciplinary boundaries, and challenge professional practice.

“Our suite of MA Programmes in Art and Design is aimed encouraging individual students to pursue excellence through their programme-specific enquiry, and to set their personal goals within a real world context of publication, exhibition, collaboration and transdisciplinary inquiry. We aim to give our students the skills to make things happen whilst positively contributing to the creative growth of their surroundings and contexts.” says Professor John Byrne, Taught-Post graduator Co-ordinator for Liverpool School of & Art Design.

Libby Patel (MA Fashion: Innovation & Realisation) is “passionate about changing and exploring the gender inequality in streetwear fashion and help create a more inclusive industry at both brand and community levels“. Their Major Project, “STREETHER”, helped them secure a job as a junior buyer with Pam Pam London, the only female sneaker/trainer store in the UK.

Niamh Cusack, who studied BA(hons) Fashion at LJMU before going on to study MA Art in Science, says that “the MA was a life changing experience that gave me confidence in my own practice and enabled me to discover what I am passionate about. As a result, I have gone on to undertake an interdisciplinary PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University investigating the viability of smart garments to connect Manchester city’s citizens to their city dwellings”.

Leanne Glass’ ‘(un)Folded’ explores how geometry can help us understand the internal workings of a virus and how it can be used in creating anti-viral therapies. Using origami, Leanne’s MA Art in Science research project constructs geometric shapes found within a virus structure and then unfolds them, to create prints based on the crease patterns of the paper. By doing so an audience can see both the internal and external views of a virus simultaneously and visualise some of the mathematical concepts used in anti-viral research such as ‘Hamilton paths’.

David Vassou (MA Fashion: Innovation & Realisation) explores the inequalities in the fashion industry for production workers in the garment supply chain, as well as escalating logistical issues contributing to the global climate crisis. The fashion industry needs imminent change and there is a gap in the market for an ecommerce fashion business model that could solve the environmental, social and ethical issues caused by over production and excessive produced development in the industry. David’s project combines the accuracy of 3D design technology, digital selling platforms, and a presale business model, to create a digital marketplace in which fashion businesses can pre-sell 3D rendered clothing directly to the consumer, minimising product development and eliminating over production. 

A launch event will take place in the John Lennon Art & Design’s Public Exhibition Space from 6-8pm on Wednesday 9^th November, with the winner of the school’s ‘Postgraduate Project’ award announced on the night. The winning project will be chosen by Dr Samantha Lackey, Director of Liverpool Biennial. The nominees are:

A selection of work from the MA Fine Art and MA Art in Science class of 2022 was previously shown in ‘Pluriverse’ – a three week exhibition at the John Lennon Art & Design Building that ran from 19th August to 8th September 2022.
