MA Fashion Innovation
Megan Stringfellow
22 years old from North Wales, who moved to Liverpool in 2021 to study Fine Art. After 3 years of studying Art I felt like I wanted to explore more creatively and expand my skills as art alone wasn’t fulfilling me anymore. That’s when I decided to study my MA in Fashion Innovation & Realisation. From painting abstract paintings of female bodies in my undergrad to expanding my skills to printing my paintings onto fabric and travelling to China to collaborate and create garments from these fabrics.
Her Body, Her Image
Her Body, Her Image is a visual campaign challenging body image in fashion through art and activism. It investigates how visual media and apparel shape young
women's perceptions of their bodies between the ages of 16 and 25. The pressures of cultural beauty standards, which are fueled by fast fashion cycles, fashion advertising and social media impact are especially harmful to this group.
The campaign consists of-
-Clothes printed with my own abstract body paintings on textiles, turning bodies into wearable works of art.
-Mixed media displays that question the visual langauge of fashion advertising include tapestries, risograph prints and paintings.
-A scholarly statement that places my work in perspective and promotes reform in the fashion industry.
This endeavor is a reinvention as well as a critique. It provides a counterpoint to the homogenized beauty narratives propagated by fast fashion, with the goal of empowering women via meaningful self-representation, embodied storytelling and visual diversity.
Her Body, Her Image is ultimately about redefining fashion as a place of inclusivity, honesty and individual strength while also upending the passive consumption of damaging notions.
